LYCOS vs. Young Earth

LYCOS is a text-based search engine (no graphics or vids) that was started in 1994 by Carnegie Mellon University.  The name "Lycos" is short for "Lycosidae", which is Latin for "wolf spider".  Lycos was funded with approximately $2M in venture capital.  In April 1996, the company completed the fastest initial public offering from inception to offering in NASDAQ history, ending its first day of trading with a market value of $300M‼  It was the first search engine to become a public company, beating Yahoo! and Excite.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycos

But what about Young Earth Science? … I’m glad you asked.

https://lycos.com/search?kw=%22Young+Earth+Science%22

#CAUTION #PELIGRO ♸♸♸

When I tried this on my phone, I got ads, weird sites and bad sites (PG-13, R+).

The search on my PC worked better, but was inconsistent.  Lycos provided just 5 results for the search “Young Earth Science” …

My reaction to these links …

I run the YES (Young Earth Science) blog.  It’s been around since 2014 and there’s a helpful #Search_Box to find the topic that suits your fancy.

Re: Craig Rusbult’s (Ph.D. Chemistry, UW-Madison) article on the ASA site.

Dr. Rusbult should consider the problem of the missing Stage 3 SNR’s (Supernova Remnants):

https://youtu.be/fTcfQKgcwfk

Here are two research projects he could initiate:

1) Go to your nearest coal mine and have a sample dated.  I predict that the coal will yield a date of less than 50K years.

2) Find the missing tree rings (≥100M):

Catastrophism - It's What's For Dinner!

Suppose your son has a serious case of bone cancer.  Would you trust a Young Scientist to treat your child?  That is, would you trust Doogie Howser (14 yo)?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096569/

Would you listen to a Young Earth Scientist #YES who shares evidence for a youthful world?  I have written two books on that account:

Catastrophism (most rocks formed fast) is a key pillar in the case for a #YoungPlanet ... Immanuel Velikovsky (Иммануи́л Велико́вский) brought #Catastrophism #CAT into larger public awareness with such works as Worlds in Collision (1950) and Earth in Upheaval (1955):

https://www.britannica.com/biography/Immanuel-Velikovsky

In 2015, Charles Ginenthal came out with Newton, Einstein, and Velikovsky which deals with the instability of the Solar System and challenges mainstream dating methods:

https://www.velikovsky.info/newton-einstein-and-velikovsky/

Einstein (d. 1955) and Velikovsky (d. 1979) corresponded with each other from 1946 to 1955:

http://www.varchive.org/cor/einstein/index.htm

https://www.velikovsky.info/before-the-day-breaks/

What started the #OldEarth fad?  Rejecting #CAT ... we read this from the New International Encyclopedia (1915):

Geological work is so slow, and the evidence of vast changes in the past, so clear, that, so long as it was held that the age of the earth was to be reckoned in a period of a few thousand years, no other conclusion was possible than that the changes observed had been rapidly made as a result of stupendous  catastrophes. ... however, it was made clear by Hutton and his successors that the recorded facts indicates slow changes, it began to appear possible that the age of the earth was great [millions of years].  The promulgation of the doctrine of evolution, and the increased knowledge of past life, as recorded by the fossils, brought further evidence of the great age of the earth. [1]

What can we say about prejudice against #CAT ?  According to Michael Rampino (Biology Prof, NYU),

In 1831, the Scottish horticulturalist Patrick Matthew (1790-1874) published a clear statement of the law of natural selection ... which both Darwin and Wallace later acknowledged. Matthew, however, was a catastrophist, and he presented natural selection within the contemporary view that relatively long intervals of environmental stability [and biological stasis ?] were episodically punctuated by catastrophic mass extinctions of life. https://nyuscholars.nyu.edu/en/publications/darwins-error-patrick-matthew-and-the-catastrophic-nature-of-the-

More on Patrick Matthew here:

Derek Victor Ager, former President of the British Geological Association, published The New Catastrophism - The Importance of the Rare Event in Geological History in 1995:

https://www.cambridge.org/us/universitypress/subjects/earth-and-environmental-science/sedimentology-and-stratigraphy/new-catastrophism-importance-rare-event-geological-history

Is a Global Flood, as described by the hundreds of #FloodLegends from around the world, really a thing?  Marilyn "super smart" vos Savant (see the graphic) said that if you flatten out the Earth, the oceans would cover the land to a depth of 8810' (1⅔ miles). [2]

One primary figure in the "No Young Earth" Movement was the late Ron Numbers (d. 2023).  I had the opportunity to hear his story in a small group @ OU's History of Science Department in the early 1990's.  Although raised Adventist, Dr. Numbers spurned Deluge Theory:

I vividly remember the evening I attended an illustrated lecture on the famous sequence of fossil forests in Yellowstone National Park and then stayed up most of the night … agonizing over, then accepting, the disturbing likelihood that the earth was at least thirty thousand years old. Having thus decided to follow science rather than Scripture on the subject of origins, I quickly, though not painlessly, slid down the proverbial slippery slope toward unbelief.

https://creation.com/the-yellowstone-petrified-forests

It is now widely recognized that the Yellowstone "fossil forests" - 27 layers @  Specimen Ridge & around 50 layers @ Specimen Creek - were formed catastrophically.  Dr Michael Arct studied the tree ring "fingerprints" of over a dozen trees in different levels and found that they all died around the same time which is consistent with rapid formation of the ash deposits.

https://creation.com/the-yellowstone-petrified-forests

Dr. Numbers should have changed his mind !!

The eruption of Mt. St. Helens (1980) #MSH is a clear parallel to Yellowstone:

https://origins.swau.edu/papers/dinos/yellowstone/eng/index.html

In 1962, Henry Morris (Genesis Flood, 1961) spoke to the Houston Geological Society and gave a presentation on #Catastrophism #CAT

https://www.galaxie.com/article/gj04-2-02

Dr. Morris spoke to a crowd of 500 folks and during the Q&A time there was dead silence!   According to one observer, the audience was "too stunned to speak!" [3]

Young Earth Today 2030 - Alpha vs. Beta Got SciFry?

Today's topic is an Alpha Course booklet:

TIME mag had an article "God vs. Science" and in it there was a quote from Paul Bloom: "Religion and science will always clash" (Gumbel, pp. 7,8). Bloom misrepresented & criticized Ben Carson in the Atlantic.  Bloom is a Psychology Prof at the University of Toronto.  Did Dr. Bloom separate twins connected at the head?

Ben Carson gave the Commencement Speech @ Emory University in 2012, how about Dr. Bloom?  I met Dr. Carson in Midland, Texas when he was running for President. Dr. Carson has criticized Darwinism and is sympathetic to the Young Earth view.  Carson on the evidence for #evo ...

It's just not there. But when you bring that up to the proponents of Darwinism, the best explanation they can come up with is "Well…uh…it's lost!"…I find it requires too much faith for me to believe that explanation given all the fossils we have found without any fossilized evidence of the direct, step-by-step evolutionary progression from simple to complex organisms or from one species to another species. Shrugging and saying, "Well, it was mysteriously lost, and we'll probably never find it," doesn't seem like a particularly satisfying, objective, or scientific response.

"Benjamin Carson: The Pediatric Neurosurgeon with Gifted Hands" by Jerry Bergman, Ph.D. (2009):

Talk about the persecution of scientists!

Ben Carson - Emory University Commencement Address (2012):

https://youtu.be/-3-veSwIWhw

Writing in the Atlantic, Paul Bloom claims that science is superior to faith:

"Religion has no equivalent record of discovering hidden truths.

So why do so many people believe otherwise? It turns out that while science and religion are as different as can be, folk science and folk religion share deep properties. Most of us carry in our heads a hodgepodge of scientific views and religious views, and they often feel the same."

"Scientific Faith Is Different From Religious Faith - Not all beliefs are equal"

by Paul Bloom (11-24-15):

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2015/11/why-scientific-faith-isnt-the-same-as-religious-faith/417357/

Solomon was a scientist, Dr. Bloom should read 1 Kings 4:29-34.

Modern Science in the Bible by Ben Hobrink is a great resource - it was published by Simon & Schuster!!

https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Science-Bible-Amazing-Scientific/dp/1439108927

Former evolutionist Ben Hobrink lives in the Netherlands and works with Open Doors.

He now holds to the traditional view: Creation In Six Days #CISD a Global Flood and a  youthful planet.

Consider the Jewish health regulations.  Job said the earth hangs on nothing (Job 26:7).  Heb 11:1-3 provides this insight: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible."  I can't see a quark with my naked eye.  In Job 15:15, we learn that even "the heavens are not pure in his sight."  That is totally consistent with supernovas, yet contrary to Aristotle's view!

https://adamslostdream.blogspot.com/2009/10/bible-astronomy-for-brainiacs.html

The remedy to Brother Nicky's book is Six-Day Creation by Robert Gurney.

https://www.amazon.com/Six-day-Creation-matter-believe-Choices/dp/1846250978

This is also a short book that came from Britain.  Dr. Gurney was born in Burma and  received his medical training at Bristol. He's worked in Israel, Tanzania and Kenya and was a general practitioner in Devon.  Gurney's book is PC, Pro-Creation (Creation In Six Days, Global Flood & Young Earth). #CISD

Nicky brings up the Galileo affair (p. 8).  I would argue that one can make a Biblical case for heliocentrism:

https://adamslostdream.blogspot.com/2009/10/bible-astronomy-for-brainiacs.html

Gumbel rocks with Galileo and noted that, "... there have certainly been periods in the history of Christianity when the church has opposed the results of scientific study. Galileo, the seventeenth century Italian astronomer, found himself in conflict with the Roman Catholic Church over his discovery that planets revolve round the sun. He was tried by the inquisition in Rome, ordered to recant and spent the final eight years of his life under house arrest"  (Gumbel, p. 8).

I'd recommend 7 Myths by my friend Michael Keyes ...

Unbelievable: 7 Myths About the History and Future of Science and Religion by Michael Newton Keas:

Dr. Keas deals with Galileo as well as some cool UFO/Alien analysis.

mooore >>

Galileo ~ Myth vs. Reality, with Dr. Rob Carter and Dr. Jonathan Sarfati:

https://youtu.be/Lb9Ulz_b2Es

Francis Schaeffer points out that the opposition to the Copernican theory was not based on scripture but on Aristotle’s views:

When the Roman Church attacked Copernicus and Galileo (1564-1642), it was not because their teaching actually contained anything contrary to the Bible. The church authorities thought it did, but that was because Aristotelian elements had become part of church orthodoxy, and Galileo’s notion clearly conflicted with them. In fact, Galileo defended the compatibility of Copernicus and the Bible, and this was one of the factors which brought about his trial.

A good synopsis of the Galileo affair may be found in chapter ten of Dinesh D’Souza’s What’s so Great about Christianity?

Gumbel spoke of the Scopes "Monkey" Trial, "Persecution of scientists did not end in the seventeenth century. As late as 1925, John T. Scopes, a high-school teacher from Drayton, Tennessee, was prosecuted for violating the state law by teaching the theory of evolution" (Gumbel, p. 8).

One of my earliest published papers on origins was on the Scopes Trial.

"The Scopes Trial and After" by Jay Hall (Vol. 2, No. 2, 1979):

https://www.arn.org/orpages/orindex.htm

The Real Truth about the Scopes Trial is found in Monkey Business by Marvin Olasky of World Magazine.  Scopes got dragged into a publicity stunt to promote the town of Dayton.  He was no activist for Darwinism, he wound up in Venezuela with Gulf Oil.

https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/monkey-business-the-true-story-of-the-scopes-trial_john--perry/520890/?resultid=bc745af4-5c39-4ba6-9cae-523a994ce60c#edition=4486074&idiq=3736330

The supposed evidence for evolution given in the trial has long been abandoned.  If George McCready Price (d. 1963), who was quoted at the trial, had been able to appear the results may have been vastly different.  He was the author of The New Geology (1923) which refutes Deep Time:

https://documents.adventistarchives.org/Books/NG1923.pdf

Price was teaching in England at the time of the trial (Monkey Business, pp. 126, 127).

While discussing the Scopes Trial there's a typo in Gumbel's work (p. 8):

  DRAYTON not Dayton (TN) ... #LetsGo_DayTon ‼

For seventeen years Dr. Kurt Wise taught at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee.  He earned a Ph.D. in Paleontology from Harvard and studied under Stephen Jay Gould (d. 2002).

https://creationwiki.org/Kurt_Wise

The first edition of Nicky's book came out in 1994, yet this typo was not caught.  This is the 2016 edition.  I take it as a sign that many fail to #DYOR Do Your Own Research and consider the info that you find from Answers in Genesis, Creation Ministries International, the Institute for Creation Research and the Creation Research Society.

  AiG  https://answersingenesis.org

  CMI  https://creation.com

  icr  https://www.icr.org

  CRS  https://www.creationresearch.org

On page 9, Nicky talks about miracles: "... it is argued that the assured results of modern science are in direct conflict with the teaching of the Bible.  Some would say, for example, that modern science shows that miracles do not happen, whereas the Bible is full of miracles."  Brother Nicky should look into The Case for Miracles by Lee Strobel:

https://www.amazon.com/Case-Miracles-Journalist-Investigates-Supernatural/dp/0310259185

Brother Nicky goes universal on us, "Mathematician, physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was the founder of modern mechanics and experimental physics.  He argued that the earth was not the center of the universe" (Gumbel, p. 12).  In the Journal of Creation, physicist Russell Humphreys wrote a paper providing evidence that the Milky Way is near the center of the universe!

"Our galaxy is the centre of the universe, quantized redshifts show" by D. Russell Humphreys, Journal of Creation 16(2):95–104, August 2002:

https://creation.com/our-galaxy-is-the-centre-of-the-universe-quantized-redshifts-show

Nicky quotes Richard Dawkins, "God almost certainly does not exist" (p. 9).

Is Gumbel aware of the 1986 Oxford Union Debate between Dawkins and creationist  AE Wilder-Smith, who had three earned doctorates? (Biological Essentialism, pp. 219-224):

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/biological-essentialism-jay-hall/1140135320

What was the verdict?  115 (or maybe 150) votes for the Creation side and the two Darwinists got 198 ... not exactly a wipe-out.

Nicky rightly points out that Science has a Christian basis (pp. 9-11).  God gave us the wisdom to understand the Equations of Creation.  We read this in Jeremiah:

This is what the Lord says: "If I have not made my covenant with day and night and established the laws of heaven and earth, then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them." (Jer. 33:25,26)

One example of science *in* the Bible is the expanding Cosmos:

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,

and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy ... (Is. 40:22)

He alone stretches out the heavens

and treads on the waves of the sea.

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion,

the Pleiades and the constellations of the South. (Job 9:8,9)

See also Is. 45:12, Is. 42:5, Jer. 10:12 and Zech. 12:1.

Nicky presents Isaac Newton as an example of a believing scientist (p. 12).

Newton held that mankind has existed for around six thousand years:

https://creation.com/isaac-newton

Gumbel quotes Physicist turned theologian John Polkinghorne (d. 2021), who also said, "If the deep-seated congruence of the rationality present in our minds with the rationality present in the world is to find a true explanation, it must surely lie in some more profound reason which is the ground of both. Such a reason would be provided by the Rationality of the Creator."

https://adamslostdream.blogspot.com/2011/05/michio-kaku-epic-fail.html

Nicky plugs Francis Collins (pp. 15,31).  In Beverly Hills in 2006, Dr. Ben Carson was part of a panel discussion on evolution along with Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and Francis Collins.  Dr. Carson opposed evolution.  Dr. Carson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008.

https://adamslostdream.blogspot.com/2013/09/ben-carson-friend-of-creation.html

Amazingly, Collins has apologized for the lockdowns:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a-pandemic-mea-culpa-from-francis-collins/ar-BB1h18DK

Will the miracles never cease?

On page 16, Nicky mentions David Hume (d. 1776).  Hume, surprisingly gave the #YoungEarth view a fair hearing.  See my book Is a Young Earth Possible? (pp. 104,105):
