Origins and the Time Question

Ariel A. Roth (b. 1927) is a zoologist who was born in Geneva:

In 1981, Dr. Roth testified before the House Education Committee in Salem, Oregon.  He said that many biologists do not regard evolution as a fact and that many researches acknowledge that Chemical Evolution is impossible.  That is, that the first living cell could have formed spontaneously.  Apparently, Dr. Roth is in the middle of the panel in the pic below):

The discussion lasted for several hours and four additional rooms held interested spectators.  The Chair claimed that Creation had lost to Science 100 years earlier.  He could have had the Scopes Monkey Trial in mind.[1]

The following factoids I gleaned from Dr. Roth's textbook Origins - Linking Science & Scripture.  Protein breaks down fairly quickly, so when we find it in the Geologic Record could it really be millions of years old? #MOYO

In 1974, Roth and other scientists lived for a week fifty feet under the ocean's surface near the Grand Bahamas. They studied coral formations.  Hydrolab was just 18 feet long and was operated by NOAA (<> NOAH).

The great thickness of some reefs has been used as an argument against a Youthful World.  Roth's conclusion, "... the fastest rates for reefs and framebuilders do allow for the growth of the Eniwetok reef, which has a thickness of 1405 meters, in less than 3,400 years."[3]  Some grow over 400 mm/yr.[4]

 

What about supposed "reefs" in the fossil record.  They were formed catastrophically as rapidly accumulating debris flows.  Consider this remark from Blatt, Middleton & Murray (Origin of Sedimentary Rocks, Prentice-Hall):

 

Closer inspection of many of these ancient carbonate "reefs" reveals that they are composed largely of carbonate mud with the larger skeletal particles "floating" within the mud matrix.  Conclusive evidence for a rigid organic framework does not exist in most of the ancient carbonate mounds.  In this sense, they are remarkably different from modern coral-algal reefs.[5]

In a paraconformity, the rock layers are parallel and there is no evidence of erosion.  In many cases this "gap" allegedly represents millions of years.  A simpler explanation is continuous deposition and the Deep Time must be dropped (like a *hot* mike).  For example, between the Aussie Bulli #COAL and the rocks above there is an alleged gap of 5 million years.  We find another case with the Morcles Nappe in Switzerland with 45 million "missing" years.[6]

 

In 2021, Roth's chapter on flat gaps in the rock layers appeared in Design and Catastrophe: 51 Scientists Explore Evidence in Nature.  This comports with #Catastrophism and the Young Earth view.

Many geologic processes are trumped up as unsolvable enigmas for the Global Flood Theory because of the time factor.  Does it take "forever" for Copper (i Cu) to form?  We read this from a Springer publication on Metals:

 

The majority of copper deposits were created by hydrothermal processes when metal sulfides were precipitated from hot waters in fractures and permeable rocks in the subsurface and at seafloor hydrothermal vents. ... Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits occur in submarine volcanic rocks and are observed forming today at seafloor hydrothermal vents.

Do we find signs of the Flood in the rock record?  The dramatic increase of the ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr isotope ratio before the Cambrian and then the sudden decrease seems to correlate with extreme erosion and then massive deposition as the Deluge progressed.

Cryogenian [720M-635M] "glacials" have a close association with sedimentary rocks formed in warm climates.  Warm, not cold conditions have been interpreted from associated kaolinite, diaspore, redbeds, dolomite, and limestone with phytolites, as well as abundant carbonates with stromatolites and carbonate ooids. Flakestone, a very distinctive fine-grained carbonate facies with its characteristic broken-up clasts, is an indicator of the action of stormy seas and not an ice-covered sea.

Henry Gee (In Search of Deep Time) makes this blunt admission:  

 

Popular views of science assume that cause, effect, and purpose can be easily discerned: hardly a day goes by without reports of discoveries of genes for homosexuality, good motherhood, breast cancer or alcoholism; of the bones of ancestors and "missing links;" of explanations of why the elephant evolved its trunk or warnings that a certain food item causes a particular disease. One would wish that Gee applied more critical thinking to the very notion of Deep Time itself!

When it comes to origins we must face the question, “What happened“?  That is, did man come from molecules or are Essential Types of Life (ETL's) limited with respect to variability?  Biological essentialism implies stability and variety among basic categories of life.

If I said that President Kennedy’s head wound was the result of abuse of exotic Norwegian teas, you might think me insane.  Most agree that JFK was shot, but in some circles the “who” is controversial.

It is possible to be an essentialist and an atheist - they are wrong about the existence of God, but at least they’re correct with respect to what happened in the history of life.  Surely the ability of the incubator bird to keep its eggs at 91°F and 99.5% humidity did not evolve.[1]  When did an intelligent agent make a cell phone, bridge or clock through “evolution”?  Evolution is the method of an inefficient “god.”

Essentialism implies a young earth. If biological entities reproduce their own type, then all the main categories have always coexisted.  In order to match this view with the geologic record the time scale must be collapsed.[2]  That is, corals, frogs and people have always coexisted.  “Who did it?” is not the only important question.  “What happened?” is also critical.

The earth is cursed because of Adam’s sin (Gen. 3:17) and even the stars are impure in God’s sight (Job 25:5).  Stars blow up and thus lack perfection.  God made man perfect from the beginning (Eccl. 7:29, Mt. 19:4).  In conclusion, there were no tornadoes before Adam and Eve sinned.  This makes theistic evolution impossible.

The Westminster Confession states that God created, “...the world, and all things therein whether visible or invisible, in the space of six days; and all very good” (ch. 4.1).  That is, galaxies and angels are untouched by sin at the end of six days when man was created.  Also, the universe cannot be billions of years older than man!

Consider the following creationists:  Steven Austin (Ph.D. Geology) was published in the International Geology Review in 1999.  David Phillips (M.A. Paleoanthropology) works at the paleontology lab at the La Brea Tar Pits.  John Oller (Ph.D. General Linguistics) is an elected member of the New York Academy of Sciences.  Kurt Wise (Ph.D. Geology - Harvard) was privileged to have the late Stephen J. Gould as his principal advisor!  The “Against All Odds” video series, part of the Annenberg/CPB collection, is shown in many statistics university courses and contains a segment in program 2 entitled “Lightning Strikes in Colorado.”  It focuses on the research of Raul Lopez (Ph.D. Atmospheric Science) - a creationist![3] 

 

#DarwinDoubters of the world unite!  David Berlinski (Ph.D. Mathematics - Princeton) said, “The theory of evolution is the great white elephant of contemporary thought.  It is large, almost entirely useless, and the object of superstitious awe.”[4]  Thomas Emmel (d. 2018), who earned his Ph.D. in Population Biology from  Stanford, stated, “To me, the concept of God is a logical outcome of the study of the immense universe that lies around us…. the evidence is all too pervasive for me to think otherwise."  Arno Penzias (Nobel prize in physics for 1978) claimed, “Creation is supported by all the data so far.”[5]  Penzias’ sentiments are echoed by another Nobel prize winner in physics (1927), Arthur H. Compton: 

 

Science is the glimpse of God’s purpose in nature. The very existence of the amazing world of the atom and radiation points to a purposeful creation, to the idea that there is a God and an intelligent purpose back of everything ... An orderly universe testifies to the greatest statement ever uttered: "In the beginning, God."[6]

 

Even an atheist can hold to the fixity of kinds.  G. H. Harper published an article in The School Science Review (a British educational journal) advocating the “steady state theory of species.”  In other words, bears reproduce bears and frogs make frogs - biological essentialism.  Harper is an atheist.[7]

 

I was happy to take a course in the History of Science from Dr. David B. Kitts, formerly a professor of Geology, at the University of Oklahoma.  In that course he pointed out that many supposed overthrusts - where “old” rocks lay uniformly upon “young” rocks -  show no evidence of this interpretation, such as breccia at the contact, and has not been sufficiently answered by the evolutionary establishment.  In an oft quoted article, Kitts proclaimed, “If a paleontologist claims to have supported the fundamental tenets of Darwinian theory in citing the fossil record then he has indeed committed a methodological error.”[8]        

Dr. Kitts debated Duane Gish and Henry Morris in 1973 and was a student of the famous evolutionist George Gaylord Simpson.[9]  In an interview in 1981, Kitts said, “Aristotle, to a greater extent than almost anyone we know about, relied upon his observations.  He observed that individual members of a species do not persist but kinds do persist. ... Evolutionists have a very elaborate abstract theory that compels us to suppose that species do not persist.”  Furthermore, Kitts claimed, “The fossil record is consistent with an astronomical number of theories.  The fossil record does not prove evolution; nothing proves evolution.”[10]

 

Let us examine the wise words of Rufus Porter (d. 1884), the founder of Scientific American, who boldly proclaimed,

 

First, then, let us, as rational creatures, be ever ready to acknowledge God as our Creator and daily Preserver; and that we are each of us individually dependant on his special care and good will towards us, in supporting the wonderful action of nature which constitutes our existence; and in preserving us from the casualties, to which our complicated and delicate structure is liable.[11]

 

One can be an atheist and still attack evolution.  By "essentialism" I mean that all basic types of life vary within limits and we are not the amoeba's cousin. Herbert Spencer, an atheist, wrote "Illogical Geology" critiquing many of the ideas upon which Darwin based his arguments!

Science changes and scientists make mistakes.  Madame Wu (d. 1997), was a physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project and should have received a Nobel prize. Since 1925, it was widely held that parity is conserved in all types of interactions.  Dr. Wu showed that a spinning cobalt-60 nucleus has a beta emission distribution that is not the same as that of its mirror image. Thus parity is not conserved.

So, maybe radio-decay rates have changed in the past.  Claus Rolfs, a physicist at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany claims that by putting certain radioisotopes in metal casing and chilling them to near 0° K you can slash their half-lives from thousands to just a few years.

The half-life for the ⁸⁷Rb to ⁸⁷Sr decay process is generally regarded at around 49B years.  However, some measurements have put that figure as high as 62B years! [2]  Now the 15th most common element in the Earth is Strontium and the 23rd is Rubidium. [3]  If it takes so many #Billions of years to turn Rubidium into Strontium, how do those relative abundances make any sense?  Recall, that #BigBang folk think it all started with H, He & Li.  You might as well claim that you can turn straw into gold (Rumpelstiltskin)!                 

 

In his conclusion to his book Earth's Deep History, Philosopher and Historian of Science Martin John Spencer Rudwick states,

 

Many of the interpretations summarized towards the end of the narrative [that is, this book] refer very much to "work in progress": how, when, and whether the relevant scientists will reach a consensus on these matters, and what it will be, remain to be seen.  There is no reason to treat the present state of knowledge about the Earth's history as the definitive Truth for all time, any more than any previous generation of scientists would have been justified in thinking in the same way about their own ideas.  The phrase "But we now know that ...," which is often used by scientists to dismiss or ridicule the conclusions of their predecessors, is always liable to return uninvited and embarrass them, a year or a decade or century later. [4]

 

Rudwick is a professing Christian [5], so you'd think he'd be Young Earth since Jesus said, "At the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female'" (Mk. 10:6, cf. Mk. 13:19,20; Lk. 11:50,51).

[6]  You may have joined Ozzy and visited the Ark Encounter in Kentucky ... it's on my bucket-list.  Depending on how you judge the ancient cubit, the Ark was 450' x 75' x 45' ... really BIG.

If we look at Nickel flow into the oceans, that gives an age of around 8K years for the seas at current rates.[8]  Too much Nickel is toxic to marine life.  Some Ni is found in Mn nodules.
