Biological Essentialism and Young Planets, Act Blue, Redistricting in Virginia and How Social Media Pushes Porn Addiction

What is Biological Essentialism?  Cats are cats, bats are bats and apes and people do not have a common ancestor.  Horses, hydras and humans are examples of Essential Types of Life (ETL's).  Bio-essentialism is basically Aristotle's Biology:

Bio-essentialism would hold that trilobites and giraffes lived at the same time.  So, the majority of the rock record testifies to a single global cataclysm.  If catastrophism is the right approach to interpreting the rock record and there never was an "Age of Dinos" since all Essential Types of Life (ETL's) began at the start, then our lovely planet must be much much younger than mainstream science allows.  Let's all "Make Earth Young Again" (#MEYA)!

 

In the March 2021 issue of Microscopy Today, we learn of the discovery of nerve fragments from a Triceratops collected from the Hell Creek Formation in Montana.   How could these delicate nerve fibers remain intact after 66M years?  Maybe our home planet is young after all.  From dinosaurs, let's turn to pandas who live a dog's life.  They're loners, have high infant death rates, reach maturity slowly and the females are only receptive during a narrow time window.  John Gittleman, in a paper "Are the Pandas Successful Specialists or Evolutionary Failures?," dropped the kraken on the pandas' woes:

 

Both panda species [giant and red] are also susceptible to fatal infection by canine distemper virus and various bacteria and ecto-parasites.  These problems may be due to low levels of dietary protein and other nutrients potentially limiting function of the immune system or to small founder populations resulting in deleterious inbreeding effects. ...The red and giant pandas are therefore being hit from two sides.  On the one hand, life-history traits of small and slow-growing neonates are producing vulnerable young.  On the other hand, the two panda species face unusually strong sources of mortality - both intrinsic and extrinsic.

If the Earth is young, what about the other planets?  Neptune has considerable internal heat, radiating more than twice the energy it receives from the sun.  If the Solar System is young, this is no problem.  The magnetic field of Neptune is about as strong as that of Uranus.  Magnetic fields decay with time, so Neptune says, “I’m young!”  Neptune’s magnetic field is not aligned with the rotation axis and does not pass through the center – an enigma for #Mainstream_Science

**ActBlue Acts #BAD !

The activist group ActBlue has been pleading the Fifth Amendment a lot lately.

The House’s Administration, Judiciary, and Oversight and Government Committees put out a report: “Fraud on ActBlue, Part II: Illicit Foreign Donations and a Cover-Up Spur Mass Resignations and Firings on ActBlue’s Legal and Compliance Team.”

In addition, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against ActBlue for “misleading consumers about its unlawful donation processes that allow fraudulent and foreign donations to undermine the integrity of our nation’s elections.”

**VA Redistricting Fiasco

A Virginia court has declared the state's redistricting vote unconstitutional recently.

Certain requirements for referendums were not followed.  Several cases are challenging various aspects of the referendum. The Tazewell Circuit Court blocked  certification of the election and denied a motion to stay pending appeal.

Now for some Maths!

 

A compact shape is where the points on the boundary are as close as possible to the center.  A circle is the most compact and regular polygons are highly compact.

A regular hexagon (all sides & angles =) is convex.  A star is not – you can take two points within the shape and connect them with a line and that line is not entirely within the star.  Hodge, Marshall & Patterson in their paper in The College Mathematics Journal from 2010 state, “Convexity-based measures of shape compactness provide an effective way to identify irregularities in congressional district boundaries. A low convexity coefficient may suggest that a district has been gerrymandered …”

Consider Illinois’ 4rth Congressional District, it has a wild shape.  There is a thin bridge connecting the Melrose Park region to the Cicero region because of the requirement that districts be contiguous (e.g. there’s 48 contiguous States).

The convexity coefficient indicates the likelihood that a district contains the line segment joining any pair of randomly selected points.  The convexity coefficient for the Fourth District of Illinois is 0.237 which is not good.[1]  Take a look at the Oklahoma Congressional Districts.  Nothing too crazy as for their shapes.  I would put the whole of Oklahoma county into District 5, but other than that I would give Oklahoma a good mark for the divisions.

Turbidity Currents, Turbidites and You

Turbidites are gravity flow formations often generated by earthquakes. [1]  The 1929 Grand Banks earthquake (off Newfoundland, M=7.2) and turbidity current caused telegraph cables to break and thus record its speed.  The current deposited at least 175 km³ of sediment and formed a bed more than 1 m thick (gravel to coarse silt).  A significant portion of the rock record is made up of turbidites.  If much of the Geologic Column was formed rapidly, then maybe this is a young planet after all.  Young Earth Science?  YES you can!

The Cambrian Burgess Shale is a significant challenge to evolution.  Multiple phyla are found in the earliest rocks and no transitional forms are found in Pre-Cambrian layers.  This conundrum, known as the Cambrian Explosion, is delineated in my book. [2]  The Burgess Shale is considered to be a turbidite!  So we find more evidence that the rock record was formed quickly.  So the next time you bring up the Cambrian Explosion in a conversation, be sure to point out that it favors Young Earth Science (YES).

A classic turbidite follows the pattern of the Bouma sequence.  Turbidites are very common.  As Stéphanie Girardclos et al point out in Marine Geology, “Gravity flow deposits, and particularly turbidite deposits, are ubiquitous in the sedimentary and rock record, and are economically important as potential hydrocarbon reservoirs.” [3]  GerardMiddleton (Geology Dept., McMaster Univ., Canada) concurs:  “Beds deposited from turbidity currents (called turbidites) are one of the commonest types of sedimentary rocks … the majority of sandstones in the geologic record were deposited either from rivers or from turbidity currents …” [4]

Even some gypsum beds, often thought to be the result of a long process of evaporation, have been interpreted as turbidites. [5]  Actually, gypsum may form directly as a precipitate from hot volcanic springs. [6]  So the next time you look at your wall (gypsum board), know that it supports Young Earth Science (YES).

Doubt Old Earth Fallacies (OEF’s)

An AP-GfK poll published last year found that there are many who doubt that Earth Day celebrates a planet that’s 4.5B years old.  They surveyed 1,012 American adults (margin of error ±3.4%, .95 confidence level).

The survey found the following:

18% are not too confident that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old.

18% are not at all confident that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old.

So a full 36% doubt Old Earth Fallacies (OEF’s)!

Weasels, Woody and YES

Don’t let Old Earth Fallacies (OEF’s) make a weasel out of you.  Be wise like Woody and seek the truth!  A woodpecker has an amazing tongue – could this have formed "by the accumulation of innumerable slight variations" (Darwin)? 

Did your grandparents use coal to heat their home?  If we date coal using radiometric dating methods, do we get millions of years?  Or, do we obtain a date of thousands of years?  YES‼

Go to your nearest coal mine and have a sample dated.  I predict that the coal will yield a date of less than 50K years.  Coal supports Young Earth Science (YES).

It does not take a rocket scientist to avoid OEF’s, just read YES – Young Earth Science to see the evidence.

Atheism, Essentialism and Young Earth Science (YES)

Even non-theists can see that fish-to-Frank evolution does not work.  G.H. Harper is an atheist and holds to a steady state theory of species.  We propose the stasis of Essential Types of Life (ETL’s).  That is, what remains static in the living realm is at a higher level than species.  Horses trot out more ponies, pigs are pigs again and sharks have a hunger to reproduce more sharks.

Harper wrote “Darwinism and indoctrination” and “Alternatives to evolutionism” in the British education journal School Science Review in the late 1970’s. [1][2]  He proposed that there were special geological conditions during the Cambrian that favored the fossilization of trilobites for example.  A better explanation consistent with biological essentialism (basic types of life vary within limits) is that most of the fossil bearing rocks are part of a Singular Epoch of Rapid Geologic Activity (SERGA).   We detail this approach in our book YES: Young Earth Science.

J.R. Downie and N.J. Barron, writing in the Journalof Biological Education, note that, “Harper (1977; 1979) argues against the teaching of science by 'indoctrination' and suggests a number of alternatives to evolutionary explanations that could be used in discussion of species origins.”

Antony Flew (d. 2010) was a leading atheist for many years, but converted to Deism late in life.  Flew rejected evolution’s explanation regarding the Origin Of Life (OOL):  “How can a universe of mindless matter produce beings with intrinsic ends, self-replication capabilities, and ‘coded chemistry?’” [3]  If evolution is wrong about the start of life, maybe it is wrong about the Universal Common Ancestor (UCA) as well.

Deep Time – Mind Map

Kim Kastens (Columbia Univ.) and Cathryn Manduca (Carleton College, Northfield, MN) have produced a revealing mind map of Deep Time in their book Earth and Mind II which they edited.  Go to this map to see the details.

Note Historical Sciences in the bottom right.  Historical Science is often ignored by evolution advocates, but Butterflies-to-Brainiacs transformation is beyond the combined lifetimes of hundred of observers.  A Chemistry experiment can be repeated often, but not the demise of T-Rex. 

Catastrophism is referred to under Big Ideas of Science, but the implications are lacking.  Derek Ager, former President of the British Geological Association, wrote The New Catastrophism in 1993.  Ager held that most rock formations came about via quick geologic action.  If most of the rock record was formed rapidly and the time between layers is minimal (google “paraconformities”), then the geologic time scale must be shortened drastically.   

Under Pedagogy the assumption is that students are a little slow and can’t understand that a cube as wide as your hand has one thousand cubic centimeters (i.e. 1 Liter).  A thousand thousand make a million and a thousand million make a billion:

The problem is NOT that student can’t get Deep Time, it’s that the real evidence favors Young Earth Science (YES) which is overlooked by mainstream Geology.  A more helpful pedagogy would be debate.  Allow students to defend both sides of the issue.

A trend setting book, YES - Young Earth Science, defends a young earth from History, Geology, Biology and Philosophy.  Michael Crichton (Jurassic World) rightly said, "Consensus is the business of politics.  Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right … The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus."

YES WorldWide Turns the Tide

International attitudes on the age of the earth often lean toward Young Earth Science (YES).  An omnicultural approach which not only looks at geology, but also history and cultural traditions of catastrophe, is the best approach to answer the age question (Gilgamesh, Atlantis etc.).  

In a survey of 33 Korean Biology teachers, only 48.5% agreed with the statement, “Modern humans are the product of evolutionary processes that have occurred over millions of years.”  Notice that this not only touches on Darwinism, but also the age of the Earth.  A significant number of these teachers (21.2%) agreed with the statement, “Organisms exist today in essentially the same form is which they always have.”  This apparently favors the stasis of Essential Types of Life (ETL’s). That is, rabbits make rabbits and snakes make snakes, which is consistent with YES.  Furthermore, more than 40% hold that “Much of the scientific community doubts if evolution occurs.”  One wonders if this was in reference specifically to the Korean scientific community. In Turkey nearly 75% of students reject evolution.  Even Turkish pre-service biology teachers had a MATE (Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution) score of just 64% which is quite low compared to most countries.  If YES is right, then Darwin can’t rule the day. [2]

A 2007 survey of 1600 Russians yielded a key result:  30% agree with the statement, “[The] first human beings were living in the same era as dinosaurs.”  A 2005 poll of the same question for the European Union had 29% agreeing with man-dino coexistence!  Surely, humans and dinosaurs together at the same time is consistent with YES.  In a 2010 opinion poll, only 26% of Russians labeled themselves as evolutionists‼  In contrast, 64% of Chinese self-identify as evolutionists. [3]  Both countries have a long history of Communist indoctrination on Darwinism.

Let's move from Russia and China to the Middle East.  Israel carries high democratic ideals and generally has a high tolerance for minority views.  Consider former chief scientist with Israel’s Education Ministry, Dr. Gavriel Avital, who challenged evolution:

If textbooks state explicitly that human beings' origins are to be found with monkeys, I would want students to pursue and grapple with other opinions. There are many people who don't believe the evolutionary account is correct. … There are those for whom evolution is a religion and are unwilling to hear about anything else.

Avital was removed from his post because of his controversial views.  If YES is True, then evolution is False.  We have zeroed in on just four countries, but if we expand our view we find that omniculturalism supports YES.  Although the Mayans were off in supposedly predicting a world changing event in 2012, they hold to a start date of 3114 BC.  Thus, the world may be only thousands of years old (NOT billions).

Some claim that a global calamity with massive impact requires a complete revision of geological science. In contrast, Stokes and Lee state in their Geology text Introduction to Geology (Prentice-Hall) that,

A catastrophist might contend that the twisting and breaking of strata, the transportation of huge blocks of rock, the violent cutting of canyons, and the wholesale destruction of life is within the power of a great universal flood - and he would be right. [1]
