I rejoice profoundly; for thinking of the many cases of men pursuing an illusion for years, often and often a cold shudder has run through me and I have asked myself whether I may not have devoted my life to a phantasy.  Now I look at it as morally impossible that investigators of truth like you and [Sir Joseph Dalton]  Hooker can be wholly wrong; and therefore I feel that I may rest in peace.

Young Earth Today 2032 - YES We Can ... Drop Deep Time!

Today we drop the Kraken on Origins by Robert Shapiro which focuses on the Origin Of Life #OOL ... it was endorsed by Isaac Asimov!

Also, we delve into the thought of anti-evolutionist Hilaire Belloc (d. 1953).  HG Wells wrote a whole book to refute his critique of Outline of History!

Before we get to Origins & Belloc, let's take jaunt into YES research.

Where do we go to find info that supports YES - Young Earth Science?  That is, the evidence from History and Science that points to a youthful world.

A classic argument for a youthful world is the downgrade of Earth's magnetic field.  It has long been understood that Earth’s magnetic field is decaying at a rate of  5% per century.  However, as reported by Forbes, the Swarm system of satellites (Alpha, Bravo & Charlie) has discovered that the actual decay is 5% per decade!

One reasonable conclusion from this data is that the earth is newer than many people think:

Robert Shapiro wrote Origins: A Skeptic's Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth which came out in 1986:

https://www.amazon.com/Origins-Skeptics-Guide-Creation-Earth/dp/0553343556

It was praised by Ashley Montagu (who favored the unity of humanity), Isaac Asimov and Lynn Margulis (Carl Sagan's first wife). Shapiro speaks of the Eskimo's Creation Story (pp. 15,16), but what about the Deluge?  A number of tribes from the "Great Snowy North" such as Eskimos, Inuits, Yup’iks and Aleuts have traditions of the Global Flood.  Flood traditions of the Northern North American indigenous tribes:

Hilaire Belloc (d. 1953) took on Darwin & HG Wells (War of the Worlds, Things to Come) in A Companion to Mr. Wells’s Outline of History. Belloc, was born in France, but died in England. He wrote over 150 books on a wide range of topics.

His travelogue The Path to Rome was a bestseller. He also wrote satiric novels that were illustrated by his close friend G.K. Chesterton! He was unjustly denied a fellowship at Oxford due to his religious views. You can read about him in Jerry Bergman's most excellent Silencing the Darwin Skeptics (p. 114):

A companion to Mr. Wells's "Outline of history" by Hilaire Belloc:

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/74534

Hilaire Belloc seems to accept the long ages of mainstream Geology, yet he  recommends Aquinas, but Thomas falls into the YES camp!!  The famed astronomer Ptolemy (d. ~170 AD) held that the constellations of the  zodiac will have finished a complete rotation in 36K years.  Aquinas responds that (pp. 361,362):

This reason seems unsuitable, because if there were any movement (revolution) in the sky which does not finish sooner than after 36 thousand years it would follow that the universe would have to last that long, which does not seem probable (quod non videtur probabile).

https://www.academia.edu/121775481/Was_Thomas_Aquinas_a_Young_Earth_Creationist

In addition, Aquinas believed in Creation in Six (real) Days #CISD

HG Wells wrote a book in response to Belloc and pushes Darwinism.  The opposite of evolution is Biological Essentialism.  My thesis is the stasis of Essential Types of Life (ETL's).  Examples of ETL's include horses, hydras and humans.  I think Belloc would agree with me since he stated,

It is true that humanly recorded historical experience covers but a very brief fraction of the total time allowed for even the shortest estimates of the past of this world. None the less, it is sufficient to prove that types once achieved are permanent. Call it five thousand years (perhaps man-made prehistoric [sic]  pictures may extend that limit), even that short period is enough to prove the existence of stable types. For if during five million years some animal form existing at the moment has been forever slowly changing by a process such that its present apparent fixity is an illusion, and is still proceeding to further slow changes indefinitely, then five thousand years ought to show a perceptible fraction of the movement; only a thousandth of it, no doubt, but one in a thousand is measurable: tiny, but measurable. Yet no fundamental change, still less any progressive change, is apparent. During all the historical epoch fixity of type is invariable. [see Ch. 2]

https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/74534/pg74534-images.html#Page_9

Belloc further defends the fixity of types in the fossil record:

The geological record also shows us nothing but Fixed Types. Each may have come by a transition more or less rapid out of some other—but at any rate fixed they are, and the longer the time demanded by the modern geologist for his periods, the longer the Fixed Type can be proved to exist. Some few survive  today from the very early days of life on this earth. It was hoped, when the theory of Natural Selection was first broached, that evidence would appear for continuous change. None has so appeared. On the contrary, the more fossil evidence we acquire the more definitely does it appear that the Fixed Type is the normal - indeed the only - recorded thing.

I argue in the last chapter of my book Biological Essentialism naturally leads to Young Earth Science (YES):

www.barnesandnoble.com/w/biological-essentialism-jay-hall/1140135320

The rate of rock formation is a key factor in the #Age_ofthe_Earth Controversy as   Belloc admits:

It is, perhaps, asking too much of our author [HG Wells] to adopt a strictly scientific attitude: that is, to distinguish between hypothesis and proved fact. And this is particularly true of a study so full of hypothesis as geology. Men pretend to vastly more knowledge than they have in that branch of knowledge - as, for instance, on the rate of stratification. A man cannot but be influenced by his own time, and Mr. Wells is influenced by the unscientific loose thinking and insufficiently supported affirmations of his generation and place.

HG Wells was born in 1866.  In the early 1800's there were a number of "Scriptural Geologists" who defended the #GlobalFlood from Scripture and Science:

500 year old Grandpas, Bats from Rats & Net Censorship (1984 stylee mon)

In our latest book Is a Young Earth Possible?, which defends a youthful world from history and science, we looked at the Sumerian King List.  This details the reigns of several kings, which if we convert them from sexagesimal to decimal we obtain a sum of around 7,000 years.  This makes the reigns of some kings around 800 years - is that reasonable?  In a June article from the Wall Street Journal, Adam Kirsch makes this fantastic revelation:

It sounds bitterly ironic now, in the midst of a global pandemic, but not long ago some of the most forward-looking people in the world believed that humanity was close to abolishing death. “If you ask me today, is it possible to live to be 500? The answer is yes,” said Bill Maris, the founder of Google Ventures, in 2015. Three years later, biomedical researcher Aubrey de Grey estimated that “people in middle age now have a fair chance” of never dying.

How does this relate to a young earth?  If man's early history only goes back a few thousand years, maybe humanity is young and the earth is as well.

"Why Bats Are One of Evolution’s Greatest Puzzles" appeared in the Smithsonian mag earlier this year.  Bats are the only flying mammals (sorry Rocky) and allegedly filled the skies for tens of millions of years.  In 2008, the bat Onychonycteris finneryi was found and dated at 52M.  We read this from the article:

The 50-million-year-old bat specimens are already recognizable as bats, so where did they come from? When, where, why and how the first bats become airborne is another mystery buried by Deep Time.

Now there is much evidence challenging Deep Time and Molecules-to-Madonna transformation.  How should the academic elites respond?  With open dialog, discussion and debate?  No ... let's go with censorship (1984 anyone?).  A piece in March from BioEssays written by Dave Speijer, advocates just that:

My favorite Thomas Paine quote: “He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself,” eloquently explains why I am not a great fan of taking down websites.  Only the most egregious ones .. should be treated thus.  ...search engines could have mandatory color coded banners warning of consistent factual errors or unscientific content ...

Speijer quotes Thomas Paine, the American Patriot who wrote Common Sense,  and then flatly contradicts him.  The First Amendment enforces real Free Speech and Ben Franklin was no book burner.  Speijer should read Unfreedom of the Press which gives the nitty-gritty on self-censorship, America's journalistic heritage, group-think, bias by omission, propaganda and pseudo-events.  Free Speech anyone?

Darwin, Deep Time fallacies and Young Earth Theory Intelligence (#YETI)

Is Deep Time a thing?  Did this planet come about thousands of years ago or millions and billions of years ago?  Gerald "Jerry" Wasserburg (d. 2016) was the John D. MacArthur Professor of Geology and Geophysics at CalTech.  He received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and published work in the fields of Geophysics, Astronomy, Geology, Astrophysics and Chemistry.  One of his academic advisors was Harold Urey of the famous Origin-Of-Life (#OOL) experiment.  Dr. Wasserburg said, "There are no bad chronometers, only bad interpretations of them!" [1]

In some cases we don't just have bad chronometers, the radiometric methods don't give us an answer at all!  From the field guide for the geology near Townsville, Queensland, Australia we learn,

Concerning the basement volcanic rocks in the area, the guidebook says, "Their exact age remains uncertain."  About Frederick Peak, a rhyolite ring dyke in the area, it says, "Their age of emplacement is not certain."  And for Castle Hill, a prominent feature in the city of Townsville, the guidebook says, "The age of the granite is unconfirmed."

In the sixth edition of Origin of Species, Darwin himself acknowledged a relatively young earth (#YETI anyone?):

Sir W. Thompson [Lord Kelvin] concludes that the consolidation of the crust can hardly have occurred less than 20 or more than 400 million years ago, but probably not less than 98 or more than 200 million years.  These very wide limits show how doubtful the data are ... It is, however, probable, as Sir William Thompson insists, that the world at a very early period was subjected to more rapid and violent changes in its physical conditions than those now occurring; and such changes would have tended to induce changes at a corresponding rate in the organisms which then existed.

Isn't that convenient, if our world is truly young, just speed up evolution!  I have a novel idea, since the scientific and historical evidence overwhelmingly favor a young planet, how about dropping Darwinism completely?  I present the documentation for a young planet in my latest book Is a Young WorldPossible?  The tide is turning, Young Earth Science Intelligence (YETI) is gaining ground.

The site for the famous Evolution series that was broadcast on PBS about twenty years ago says this: "Humans share a common ancestor with modern African apes, like gorillas and chimpanzees.  Scientists believe this common ancestor existed 5 to 8 million years ago."  Now if our planet is just 20M by Kelvin's reasoned guess, the time since the ape-man progenitor emerged takes up about one third of earth history!  Even 98M is nowhere near the time that Darwin's speculations require.

John Joly, Chair of Geology and Mineralogy at Trinity College – Dublin, pioneered radiation therapy as well as radiometric dating.  Due to inconsistent results he eventually came to reject finding the age of rocks via radiodating.[2]  He gave a date for the age of our planet of about 90M years based on the amount of salt in the ocean.[3]  Joly even argued that radioactive decay had proceeded faster in the past than at present.[4]

Please consider giving a copy of Is a Young Earth Possible? to your friends and family and coworkers (birthdays, Christmas etc.).  The age-of-the-earth controversy relates to a number of key issues in the public square such as climate change, homeschooling, government funding of science, bullying, depression, fake news, net censorship and free speech.  View our newly updated website here.

Is a Young Earth Really Possible?

Our new book is available here.  Is A Young Earth Possible? argues for a young earth from history and science.  We also tackle the Solar System, Neanderthals as well as the Darwin/Depression connection.

According to NASA, water on the Moon is young:

... the topmost layer of polar crater floors is getting reworked over thousands of years, according to calculations by Farrell, Hurley, and their team. Therefore, the faint patches of frost that scientists have detected at the poles using instruments such as LRO’s Lyman Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) instrument could be just 2,000 years old, instead of millions or billions of years old as some might expect ...

Did you know that the 8th man to walk on the Moon, James Irwin, rejected evolution and accepted a youthful world?  Irwin charted seismic activity, collected high-energy particles emitted by the sun, named lunar locations and obtained rock samples, including the “Genesis rock.”  The crew returned with 77 kilograms of moon rocks.  Irwin also received the United Nations Peace Medal.

The May 2019 issue of the Smithsonian highlighted Neanderthals.  They supposedly lived from around 400K years ago to 40,000 BC – that’s a long time (p. 28).  Neanderthals were smart, painted, created sticky pitch, buried their dead, cooked, carved ornaments and interbred with modern humans.  I propose in Is A Young Earth Possible? that the Neanderthals would have had a population explosion is they thrived for several hundred thousand years.  Their remains should be everywhere, but this is not the case.  Maybe the dating methods are dubious.

I also deal with Darwin and the meaningof life in the book.  A philosopher from Lancaster University (UK) frankly admits,

It has often been thought, and has recently been argued, that one of the most profound impacts of Darwin’s theory of evolution is the threat that it poses to the very possibility of living a meaningful, and therefore worthwhile, life.

This scholar attempts to avoid this dilemma, but I maintain in my book that this is a futile trek.

Origins and the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian is a great place to visit & they have a super magazine!  I grew up in Northern Virginia and went to the museum several times - that's where I saw my 1st moon rock.

They have an article on their site "What Does it Mean to be Human?" that could be greatly improved.  The source is ...

Human Origins Initiative, Broader Social Impacts Committee

Co-chairs: Dr. Connie Bertka and Dr. Jim Miller

Apparently, Bertka & Miller have not read my book YES - Young Earth Science where I argue from history and science for a youthful world and show the flaws of Darwinism (TotalYouth.us).  They totally miss the distinction between historical science and observational science.  They speak of faraway planets ...
Sometimes such observations are direct, like measuring the chemical composition of a rock.  Other times these observations are indirect, like determining the presence of an exoplanet through the wobble of its host star.
At this point we have neither a time machine nor a History Observation Device (HOD).  So its a great speculation when is comes to Frogs-to-Firemen transformation.  We cannot directly experiment on the alleged evolution of the past.

Bertka & Miller also fail to catch the the full philosophical aspect, but do speak of
 Analytic and synthetic reasoning
Einstein said this ...

A knowledge of the historic and philosophical background gives that kind of independence from prejudices of his generation from which most scientists are suffering. This independence created by philosophical insight is—in my opinion—the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a real seeker after truth.

Berka & Miller completely overlook the Christian foundation of science.

What does it mean to be human?  Alfred Russel Wallace came up with evolution by natural selection before Darwin, according to many.  Wallace held that humans were unique and not related to lower primates.  Human consciousness, morality, walking upright, the human hand, speech and higher intelligence were some of his reasons. [1]

Berka & Miller focus on ...
Judaism, Christianity, Islam ... But they fail to bring out a key point.  At the end of 2018, the traditional Jewish calendar put the age of the world at 5779 years.  The date from Ussher (not the musician ♫) of 4004 BC for the beginning has been printed in Bibles for hundreds of years.  Islamic tradition states that there is a thousand years between Adam & Noah. [2]  This is consistent with the young earth view.

Berka & Miller speak of ...
historical traditions  ... but do not mention such records that favor a young world.  Robert Kovach wrote Early Earthquakes of the Americas (Cambridge University Press) and investigated Meso-American cultures such as the Aztecs, Incas, Toltecs and Mayans.  Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxóchitl who died in 1648 was the great-great-grandson of an Aztec ruler and recorded the traditions of ancient Mexican Culture.  Using the beginning of the Toltec era as a starting point, Kovach estimates the beginning of earth to around 3566 BC to 4190 BC. [3]
