When it comes to origins we must face the question, “What happened“?  That is, did man come from molecules or are Essential Types of Life (ETL's) limited with respect to variability?  Biological essentialism implies stability and variety among basic categories of life.

If I said that President Kennedy’s head wound was the result of abuse of exotic Norwegian teas, you might think me insane.  Most agree that JFK was shot, but in some circles the “who” is controversial.

It is possible to be an essentialist and an atheist - they are wrong about the existence of God, but at least they’re correct with respect to what happened in the history of life.  Surely the ability of the incubator bird to keep its eggs at 91°F and 99.5% humidity did not evolve.[1]  When did an intelligent agent make a cell phone, bridge or clock through “evolution”?  Evolution is the method of an inefficient “god.”

Essentialism implies a young earth. If biological entities reproduce their own type, then all the main categories have always coexisted.  In order to match this view with the geologic record the time scale must be collapsed.[2]  That is, corals, frogs and people have always coexisted.  “Who did it?” is not the only important question.  “What happened?” is also critical.

The earth is cursed because of Adam’s sin (Gen. 3:17) and even the stars are impure in God’s sight (Job 25:5).  Stars blow up and thus lack perfection.  God made man perfect from the beginning (Eccl. 7:29, Mt. 19:4).  In conclusion, there were no tornadoes before Adam and Eve sinned.  This makes theistic evolution impossible.

The Westminster Confession states that God created, “...the world, and all things therein whether visible or invisible, in the space of six days; and all very good” (ch. 4.1).  That is, galaxies and angels are untouched by sin at the end of six days when man was created.  Also, the universe cannot be billions of years older than man!

Consider the following creationists:  Steven Austin (Ph.D. Geology) was published in the International Geology Review in 1999.  David Phillips (M.A. Paleoanthropology) works at the paleontology lab at the La Brea Tar Pits.  John Oller (Ph.D. General Linguistics) is an elected member of the New York Academy of Sciences.  Kurt Wise (Ph.D. Geology - Harvard) was privileged to have the late Stephen J. Gould as his principal advisor!  The “Against All Odds” video series, part of the Annenberg/CPB collection, is shown in many statistics university courses and contains a segment in program 2 entitled “Lightning Strikes in Colorado.”  It focuses on the research of Raul Lopez (Ph.D. Atmospheric Science) - a creationist![3] 

 

#DarwinDoubters of the world unite!  David Berlinski (Ph.D. Mathematics - Princeton) said, “The theory of evolution is the great white elephant of contemporary thought.  It is large, almost entirely useless, and the object of superstitious awe.”[4]  Thomas Emmel (d. 2018), who earned his Ph.D. in Population Biology from  Stanford, stated, “To me, the concept of God is a logical outcome of the study of the immense universe that lies around us…. the evidence is all too pervasive for me to think otherwise."  Arno Penzias (Nobel prize in physics for 1978) claimed, “Creation is supported by all the data so far.”[5]  Penzias’ sentiments are echoed by another Nobel prize winner in physics (1927), Arthur H. Compton: 

 

Science is the glimpse of God’s purpose in nature. The very existence of the amazing world of the atom and radiation points to a purposeful creation, to the idea that there is a God and an intelligent purpose back of everything ... An orderly universe testifies to the greatest statement ever uttered: "In the beginning, God."[6]

 

Even an atheist can hold to the fixity of kinds.  G. H. Harper published an article in The School Science Review (a British educational journal) advocating the “steady state theory of species.”  In other words, bears reproduce bears and frogs make frogs - biological essentialism.  Harper is an atheist.[7]

 

I was happy to take a course in the History of Science from Dr. David B. Kitts, formerly a professor of Geology, at the University of Oklahoma.  In that course he pointed out that many supposed overthrusts - where “old” rocks lay uniformly upon “young” rocks -  show no evidence of this interpretation, such as breccia at the contact, and has not been sufficiently answered by the evolutionary establishment.  In an oft quoted article, Kitts proclaimed, “If a paleontologist claims to have supported the fundamental tenets of Darwinian theory in citing the fossil record then he has indeed committed a methodological error.”[8]        

Dr. Kitts debated Duane Gish and Henry Morris in 1973 and was a student of the famous evolutionist George Gaylord Simpson.[9]  In an interview in 1981, Kitts said, “Aristotle, to a greater extent than almost anyone we know about, relied upon his observations.  He observed that individual members of a species do not persist but kinds do persist. ... Evolutionists have a very elaborate abstract theory that compels us to suppose that species do not persist.”  Furthermore, Kitts claimed, “The fossil record is consistent with an astronomical number of theories.  The fossil record does not prove evolution; nothing proves evolution.”[10]

 

Let us examine the wise words of Rufus Porter (d. 1884), the founder of Scientific American, who boldly proclaimed,

 

First, then, let us, as rational creatures, be ever ready to acknowledge God as our Creator and daily Preserver; and that we are each of us individually dependant on his special care and good will towards us, in supporting the wonderful action of nature which constitutes our existence; and in preserving us from the casualties, to which our complicated and delicate structure is liable.[11]

 

One can be an atheist and still attack evolution.  By "essentialism" I mean that all basic types of life vary within limits and we are not the amoeba's cousin. Herbert Spencer, an atheist, wrote "Illogical Geology" critiquing many of the ideas upon which Darwin based his arguments!

The Argument: Aristotle to Thousands of Years

Aristotle's views on biology support the thesis that Essential Types of Life (horses, frogs, humans etc.) remain stable and vary within limits.  That is, stasis along with change that has a boundary.  There is an excellent episode of In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg (BBC) on Aristotle's Biology.  My interview with David Kitts, who taught Philosophy, Geology and History of Science, touches on Aristotle as well.

Now, when we combine this premise, stasis of Essential Types of Life (ETL's), with the fossil record, how do we proceed?  Tertullian pointed to fossils found on mountains as evidence of the Great Flood, the mega-catastrophe Earth endured just a few thousand years ago that even the founder of modern paleontology Georges Cuvier accepted.  Augustine saw fossils as the remains of creatures living before the Flood.  Martin Luther referred to fossils as being the result of the Deluge in his commentary on Genesis.  Agostino Scilla published a work in 1670 on fossils which he illustrated himself which pointed to the Flood as their cause. [1]

But what about the fossil order?  There are places on the earth where ALL the geologic periods overlay the Pre-Cambrian (Pre-Flood).  In fact, 23.2% of the Ordovician is directly on top of the Pre-Cambrian and 18.6% of the Devonian is directly on top of the Pre-Cambrian.  This would seem to imply a shrinking of the traditional geologic time scale.

What if most of the geologic record was part of a single event, how is the general fossil order explained?  Ecological zonation, shallow marine organisms would be in the lower layers, hydrodynamic sorting and the higher mobility of vertebrates seems to be the solution.  That is, there was no "Age of Trilobites" or "Age of Dinosaurs."

Now, if most of the rocks were formed rapidly, that is catastrophically, then we need to drastically reduce the traditional geologic timescale.  Derek Ager was President of the British Geological Association and wrote The New Catastrophism which provides a plethora of examples of rapid geologic action.  If most rocks formed fast, could this planet be young (thousands, not billions of years old)?

Is there a pointer that implies most of the geology came from one event?  Let's look at the Strontium ratio (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) combined with sea level changes through geologic time:

The fact that these graphs match up fits better with the idea the most of the rocks were made from a Singular Event of Rapid Geologic Activity (SERGA).  Did the giant dragonflies live Millions Of Years Ago (MOYA)?  Maybe not.

Obama, Free Speech and banning a Young Earth

President Barack Obama had this to say about free speech:  "I believe in evolution, scientific inquiry, and global warming; I believe in free speech, whether politically correct or politically incorrect ..."  Kudos to Obama for supporting the First Amendment!  However, if Young Earth Science (YES) is true, then Darwinism in all its many splendored forms must be tossed out.  In addition,  there are sufficient scientific reasons for rejecting the "climate disruption" movement.  Writing in 2016, Anthony Fisher provided this keen summary of Obama's thoughts on free speech:

For the better part of the past year, President Obama has repeatedly beaten this drum. He decried "militant political correctness" on college campuses as a "a recipe for dogmatism" in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopolous.  He told a high school student in Iowa that he didn't believe young people needed to be "coddled and protected from different points of view."  In an interview with NPR, Obama said, "unwillingness to hear other points of view can be as unhealthy on the left as on the right."

A startling law proposed in California (AB 2943) could lead to the banning of Bibles according to a CBN News report.  You can read the law yourself - note Section 1 point "r" in the light of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

Is there a chance that the young earth view will eventually be banned in the USA?  Recall that during the Obama administration organizations seeking tax-exempt status associated with the Tea Party, “Patriots,” criticizing the government or Constitutionalists were subject to extreme scrutiny by the IRS. 

What about so-called “net neutrality?”  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) attempted to control the Net in 2010 making an analogy with the AT&T phone monopoly we suffered under during most of the last century.  In 2014, courts struck down this push.

Now let's consider some of the evidence for a youthful world.  Chemist Melvin Cook (d. 2000) was an explosives expert in the mining field.  He was a Nitro-Nobel recipient and won the Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists.  Cook was a Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Utah and published around 200 scientific papers.  His groundbreaking Prehistory and Earth Models was published in 1966 (I own a signed copy).

According to Cook, high oil pressure is consistent with YES:  "... there are really no completely impervious traps [e.g. anticline trap]; abnormal and abnormally high pressures can thus only mean sudden deep burial not long ago." [1]

Let's continue with the oil theme.  Crude contains porphyrins which as William Low Russell explains, writing in Principles of Petroleum Geology (McGraw-Hill),  "... are complex organic substances related to chlorophyll and hemoglobin, which are destroyed by oxygen and heat."  Rapid catastrophic burial would protect them from oxygen and if most rocks were formed quickly, this poses a challenge for the standard geologic timescale.  This mainstream source admits that the source beds for oil deposits were formed quickly (see p. 11).  Could it be that these porphyrins in oil were protected from heat for millions of years?  We think not.  Let us know your opinion ==> YoungEarthScience@yahoo.com

Rush Limbaugh and Young Earth Science (YES)

Happy Pi π Day (belated)‼  I was shocked in a happy way when I heard Rush Limbaugh yesterday talk about the age-of-the-earth controversy (just like Rick Perry, Marco Rubio & Ben Carson!).  Is Rush ready to embrace Young Earth Science (YES)?  In the context of the death of Stephen Hawking and the Big Bang, Rush divulged this,

The moment in timeline on this gigantic time of which we are not even the size of a speck of sand… To put this in perspective, the timeline of earth from beginning to present, it’s either billions and billions or it’s 10,000 years. ... Let’s say billions and billions [Sagan anyone?].  If it’s billions and billions or even if it’s 10,000, our time here - given life expectancy, 83, whatever it is - is a speck of sand.  Who are we?  What kind of audacious arrogance do we have to say that the way things are now is the way they were at the birth or creation or the so-called norm?  We don’t even know that!

His brother David admitted that the young earth view is a live option. [1]   Furthermore, a 2014 AP-GfK poll found that 36% doubt the old-earth view.  Here are my podcasts confronting Old Earth Fallacies and defending YES.  Rush pushes against the mainstream, arguing against the billions of years hawked by Big Science is non-conformist as well.  Rush said this yesterday,

... I’m not a conformist, and I don’t get sucked in by conventional wisdom.  In fact, conventional wisdom repels me.  Conventional wisdom actually pushes back at me. I don’t think I’m constitutionally capable of joining conventional wisdom, because it’s groupthink.  And you have to set aside your own brain, you have to set aside your curiosity, you have to disregard your own common sense, and you have to subscribe to the groupthink. ...

Does Google censor Young Earth Science (YES)?

First, to make plain the grammar - I am not saying that I have definite proof that Google is censoring the young earth view, but I would love to have your feedback on this question.  One opinion piece from US News claims that Google is the world's biggest censor.  Project Veritas recently released video proof that exposed Twitter for banning  views that run counter to the Silicon Valley mindset.

One interesting paper in Nature from some Japanese researchers last year showed that lightning can produce gamma rays which can lead to the formation of Carbon-14.  Of course this would require some revisions in radiocarbon dating which does not consider this source.  When was the last time you dated some coal or a dino bone using the C-14 method?  My prediction is that you will get thousands of years and not millions.

Another paper that did not get much attention is from the American Nuclear Society.  Robert Hayes points out that not taking into account differences in diffusion rates can lead to serious errors (the isochron method is intended to improve radiometric dates):

By taking into consideration the isotope effect (differential mass diffusion rates) when measuring isotopic ratios from very old samples, the distribution dependency in the coefficient ratios will cause a bias if isotopic diffusion rates are not identical throughout a sample.  The isotope effect is that isotopes having a smaller atomic mass will diffuse faster throughout a medium than will their heavier counterparts causing concentration gradients of their ratios even when there are no contributions from radioactive decay. The application to Rb/Sr dating is evaluated and shown to result in expected age overestimates when isotopic ratios are employed to linearize the isochron.  ...  the only method to fully eliminate the isotope effect is to not use isotopic ratios at all in radioisotopic dating as the physics do not require the use of isotopic ratios for geochronological dating.  However, without the ratios, the data are inherently noisy. [emphasis added]

Is Evolution Wrong?

President-elect Donald Trump said he will be the “greatest jobs producer that God ever created” in a recent press conference (1-11-17).  Does the Donald Deny Darwin??  In a prior post we discussed how Pence views evolution.

Is School Choice Weak?

On January 19th, 2016 (the day after Martin Luther King Day) 10,000 school choice supporters rallied in Tallahassee.  Parents, educators and activists advocated for the biggest private school choice program in the U.S. (78K students participate).  A lawsuit is currently challenging it on constitutional grounds.  Martin Luther King III addressed the crowd near the Florida State Capitol.

Young Earth Science (YES) is one key motivating school choice.  Many hold that the earth is thousands of years old and not billions.  In a survey that came out in 2014, a full 36% of Americans are not too (or not at all) confident that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old (AP-GfK).

No Fossil Trees with Thousands of Rings

Tree rings grow support for Young Earth Science (YES).  Tree Rings Matter.  What tree in the fossil record has the most rings?  There is a Sequoia specimen with 816 growth rings.  Just search “sequoia 89 by 68.”  Where are the fossil trees that are thousands of years old?  Sequoias, Redwoods, Bristlecone pines, Junipers and Olive trees can live for thousands of years.[1]  Why are there no 2K, 3K or 4K year old trees in the fossil record?  If the earth is young this is no problem.  How do supporters of Old Earth Fallacies (OEF’s) handle this enigma?    

Many attempt to avoid the weight of this argument by claiming that the fossil record of trees is not abundant.  The oldest forest trees are dated at 385M years by Big Science, so lack of fossil evidence is just an escape mechanism.  If there have been hundreds of millions of years for fossil trees to form, then why do we see no fossil trees with thousands of rings?  Trees can’t run away from tsunamis or floods.  We witnessed the initial formation of fossil trees in the 1980’s.  According to Wikipedia:

“…virtually identical lahar and stream deposits that contain buried upright standing trunks of forests and beds of transported logs and upright stumps were created by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, and other Quaternary and Holocene eruptions of other Cascade Range volcanoes.  The Late Pleistocene lahar and stream deposits of Mount St. Helens contain buried prehistoric logs and in place (in situ) upright tree trunks that are in the initial stages of being naturally petrified by silica.” (emphasis added)

Erling Dorf (d. 1984) was a professor of Geology at Princeton.  He studied the fossil trees at Yellowstone and found that the average number of tree rings was 500 – far less than 4,000!  At one time the Yellowstone Fossil Forest was considered to have taken 20K years to form.[2]  Now a catastrophic interpretation is widely accepted.

Some might claim that redwoods don’t ever become fossilized, but that’s not the case.  The PetrifiedForest near Calistoga, CA has the largest fossil trees in the world.  There are redwoods and one pine that have been turned to rock.  The fossil tree named “The Queen” is estimated to have 2K rings, but this deposit is of relatively recent origin according to standard geological dating (3.4M).[3]  The point is, where are the trees from Jurassic times with 2K, 3K or 4K rings? 

Is the fossil record really woefully incomplete?  A scholarly work last century specifically addressed that very issue, The Adequacy of the Fossil Record edited by Stephen Donovan and Christopher Paul (Wiley, 1998).  Donovan and Paul demonstrate that protesting about the “incompleteness of the fossil record” is just an excuse.  This book deals specifically with the completeness of the fossil data.  The fossil record may be incomplete, but it is entirely adequate for most studies.
